It is springtime soon in Kansas City. Students across the country will begin to wait outside for their school bus to arrive. Let us investigate how we can keep our children safe while they are waiting for their transportation.

Did you know?

In certain countries, there is an age requirement for when your child can walk to and from the school bus stop alone. Unfortunately, that rule is not enforceable in the United States, and many kids in Kansas and Missouri walk without parents to and from the school bus stop unaccompanied. Although Kansas City Kansas Public Schools, KCKPS recommends parents escort children to the bus stop and wait with them to assure supervision and safety.

We are not criticizing by any means free-range kids and encouraging children’s autonomy but how do you know when your child is ready? As a parent, you must ensure your child is safe, responsible, and prepared to walk alone.

Keep Kids Safe at the Bus Stop: School Bus Safety

A study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, NHTSA showed that “Students are about 70 times more likely to get to school safely when taking a bus instead of traveling by car”. NHTSA also believes that the biggest risk is not riding the bus but boarding and exiting the bus. Students can come across various hazards, some include:

  •  Speeding and Passing Cars
  • Distracted Drivers
  • Slip and Falls
  • Strangers

Tips for Drivers Near School Bus Stops

  • Avoid Distractions: Never drive distracted or while using a cell phone. It can cause permanent damage. If it is an urgent matter PULLOVER.
  • Pay Attention to lights: Whether they are flashing or regular streetlights. It is always important to pay attention to the road and what is in front of you.
  • Slow Down: Always watch children walking and crossing the street. Stop if you see the bus lights and stop signs flashing.
  • Watch for Children Getting on and off the School Bus: Often children can be impulsive leading to unpredictable actions and decisions. Being aware of our surroundings can help keep them safe.
